child rights

In 1989, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It was ratified by 191 countries around the world, including Uganda. The Convention safeguards the rights of all children, including the rights to survival and development, non-discrimination, consideration of their best interests and their involvement in matters which concern them. It calls on governments to provide material assistance to support families and to keep children with their parents. Significantly, it recognizes that children – and not other members of society – hold their own rights.

The Convention strengthens the legal position of Ugandan children. But the work of implementing these legal protections is left up to organizations in the field. At Bega Kwa Bega, we are committed to supporting projects that protect orphans physically and emotionally, as well as projects that protect their futures.

We approach the rights of children from four angles: strengthening families, legal rights, changing attitudes and teaching children about their rights.

Strengthening Families

We believe in programs that help families provide a healthy, protective environment for all children, including orphans. This includes providing the knowledge, materials and skills to recognize and prevent the abuse of children’s rights.

Legal Rights

We work with Ugandan lawyers, community leaders and other organizations to lobby for and protect children’s legal rights at the community level. These include land and property rights. For example, in conjunction with Bega Kwa Bega, a Ugandan community-based organization, we ensure orphans do not lose their property when their parents die and can continue living in their homes. This helps them maintain a connection to their parents, ensures they have shelter and provides them with security for the future.

Teaching Children

We support projects that educate and teach children their rights. We believe in giving children the skills and knowledge to develop self confidence, self reliance and the ability and power to protect themselves against exploitation.
